Recreation is any activity, such as play, that entertains, distracts or stimulates, or recreation can be the process of restoring something, while relaxation is the act of relaxing or the state of being relaxed; the opposite of stress or tension; the goal of recreation and leisure activities. The act of relaxing or the state of being relaxed; the opposite of stress or tension; the goal of recreation and leisure activities. Leisure has many positive effects on health, and therapeutic recreation has therefore been developed to take advantage of these effects. Relaxation is the process of unwinding and can be defined as the release of tension and the refreshment of the mind or body.

Music is composed and performed for many purposes, such as recreation, religious or ceremonial purposes, or entertainment. People with such degrees often work in parks and recreation centres in cities, community projects and activities. People spend their time on activities of daily living, work, sleep, social duties and leisure, the latter time being free from prior obligations to physiological or social needs, which is a prerequisite for recreation. Physical activity during leisure time is important in reducing obesity, osteoporosis and cancer, especially colon and prostate cancer risk in men and breast cancer risk in women; however, not all malignancies are reduced, as outdoor leisure activities are associated with a higher risk of melanoma.

It is difficult to separate leisure from the general concept of play, which is usually used to describe children’s recreational activities. Some recreational activities – such as gambling, recreational drug use or criminal activities – may violate social norms and laws. Therefore, it is important that we invest time in rest and relaxation to optimise our mental and physical health. A recreation centre is a place for leisure activities, usually managed by a municipal authority.

NCTRC certified therapeutic recreation professionals are called Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. If the activity is exceptionally exciting, physically challenging or risky, it is sometimes called adventure recreation or adventure training rather than extreme sports. In the United States, most states have a professional organisation for continuing education and certification in recreation management. Thus, for a musician, playing an instrument may be a profession at one time and a recreational activity at another.

A recreation specialist would be expected to meet the recreational needs of a community or a particular interest group.
