Many see visiting a spa as the ultimate form of relaxation. Turn off from the outside world and indulge in a bit of “me time”. Unfortunately, time and money commitments often mean regular trips to spas are not always possible, so why not have a similar experience at home?

Home spa days can be created using relaxing music, a spa inspired environment, a hot bath, essentail oils, candles and a bit of preparation time.

The spa trend is everywhere these days. Whether you are a busy parent looking for a way to relax or a professional wanting a place to unwind and recharge, there’s a whole world of benefits to be found at home.

Today, we’re going to cover how to create an epic spa day at home that’s all about YOU—and no one else, including kids.

Clean the Bathroom

OK I know what you’re going to say, how is cleaning the bathroom part of a spa day? When you clean the bathroom, you’re showing that you care about it and that your house will be a more inviting place for you to relax in.

One way to think about mundane tasks is that they offer you time to reflect on yourself.  By cleaning up your own messes, you are showing yourself that you take pride in your home and that you care about your family. It makes you feel good about yourself.

Spend time preparing the room so that you feel comfortable in it, you don’t want to get settled and then be bugged that towels are on the floor.

If you’re not using the bathroom, pick a space where you can sit and relax, making sure it is clean, tidy and free of clutter.

Create A Spa-like Environment

“A spa-like environment” means you’re setting the stage for the experience to be relaxing and enjoyable.

This can be done by playing soft music, or lighting the room in soothing colors. Adding color to your space can add a sense of tranquillity.

Pictures of nature can help you feel relaxed and calm. Put up pictures of trees, flowers, mountains, animals, etc.  Add real world natural elements such as flowers, pebbles or shells.

Set the lights low or dot candles around the room to create a soft, intimate, feel to the space. You don’t want has bright white light, this is more likely to keep you alert than help you relax.

Getting a small Bluetooth speaker in the corner of the room will allow you to stream relaxing music. There is lots available via Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music etc, just search for ‘relaxing music’ or ‘calming music’ and find a playlist you can pop on in the background.

Some relaxing music incorporates the sounds of nature. For example, running water or bird calls. I find these to be especially relaxing. Just make sure to visit the restroom before getting settled with running water sounds playing in the background, else you may find you need to pause your spa experience for a quick trip to the bathroom!

Choose the Right Products

A spa day is all about being pampered, it’s about rejuvenating the skin, applying face masks and feeling refreshed by the process. Taking time out just for you is important for both our phyical and mental health, make sure you’ve the right tools for this particular job.

What do you need to have a spa day at home?  I’d sugest:

  • A bathtub
  • Bath bombs, salts or bubbles
  • Something to massage your head with, like a scalp massager
  • Facial mask
  • A face cloth
  • Tea light candles
  • Oil
  • Essential oils
  • Relaxing music
  • Refreshments
  • Candles
  • Snug bathrobe

This is by no means a definitive list, there are lots of products available, including a wide range of relaxation gadgets such as self massage devices.

Create Your Scents

Essential oils are one of the most popular methods used to create a spa-type atmosphere at home. They’re inexpensive, natural, and smell amazing. They come in many scents, such as citrus, lavender, peppermint, etc. Lavender is one of the best scents for relaxation, it has a calming effect that can help you drift off to sleep.

Use these essential oils to scent your room via a diffuser. Alternatively, use scented candles around the room. Be careful when using the same scent in multiple candles, you may find it becomes overpowering if you have several of them lit at the same time.

How to set up your own spa day at home

It’s easy to set up your own spa day at home! You’ll need a few simple things: some relaxing music, some comfortable clothes, and some pre-set up supplies.

Set the scene by lighting candles, playing music and turning on diffusers.  Then fill your bath with hot water and add the bath bomb, crystals or bubbles.  While the bath is preparing consider applying a face mask.  Soak in the tub for at least 20 minutes (remembering to remove the face mask per instructions).  Dry yourself and put on the snug bathrobe.

Music is a very important part of any spa day. It can help to set the mood and create a relaxing environment.

Another essential step is to make sure your environment is ready for relaxation.  Spending time cleaning and tidying, adjusting the lighting, closing the curtains, and making sure you have all the supplies you need are ready means you can enjoy your time.

What to do on your spa day at home

Soaking in a bath is just one idea for your spa day, and the easiest to do if you’re alone.  Here are some DIY spa ideas:

  • Get your other half or close friend to use essential oils and give you:
    • A back massage;
    • A foot massage;
    • A head massage,
  • Exfoliate your skin with a scrub or a loofah.
  • Lie back and relax with an LED face mask.
  • Relax with a good book post bath time.

There are many things you can do on your spa day at home, and it’s up to you what order you want to do them in.

Create A Bedtime Ritual

No time for a full spa day experience?  Incorporate a mini spa like bedtime routine at the end of the day to help you fall asleep faster. Try this ritual:

  • Dim the lights in your bedroom.
  • Have lavender scented products (e.,g. candle, oils etc) near your bed.
  • Lie down and close your eyes.
  • Place a hand over your heart and take five slow, deep, breaths in and out.
  • Spend 5 minutes thinking about what you’d like to accomplish during the day.
  • Play some natural sounds, such as running water, at a low volume.

Where possible, put the lights and the natural sounds on an automatic shut off timer. You can do this using a timer plug, or for lights consider some ‘smart bulbs’ that allow you to adjust the color and set an automatic shut off time.

What are the benefits of having a spa day at home?

If this all sounds like a lot of work and not very relaxing at all you’re probably wondering what the benefits of a home spa day actually are.

A home spa day can save you a lot of money over paying to visit a spa.  Relax in your own home means there is no travel time, you can tailor it to your personal tastes with your preferred scents and music, and you can make your relaxation time as long as you like.

Most people know the benefits of taking time for themselves, but sometimes it’s hard to find the time or money to go out and get a massage or facial. That’s where at-home spa treatments come in! Not only can they help you save money, but they can also provide a much-needed distraction during difficult times and improve your sleep quality.

Regular spa days can provide stress relief and boost seratonin levels, which can lead to better mental health overall. In fact, according to one study, people who took part in regular spa treatments showed a significant decrease in depression levels and an increase in sleep quality. And if that’s not enough incentive, consider this: having regular spa days at home can actually help you save money visiting expensive spas!

How to relax on your spa day at home

There are a few different ways to relax on your spa day at home. One is to light some candles and turn on some relaxing music. Another is to take a hot bath with some soothing aromatherapy. You can also give yourself a facial or a mani/pedi. Whatever you do, make sure to take some time for yourself and relax!

There are many ways to relax on your spa day at home. You can choose from a variety of different items, including baths, facials, and massages. You can also use aromatherapy or music to help you relax.

One of the best ways to relax is to use a hot bath. Add some scented candles and Epsom salts to the water for an extra-relaxing experience. If you’re feeling really adventurous, add in some food coloring or a few drops of lavender oil.

Another great way to relax is with a facial. You can either use a store-bought facial mask or make one yourself using ingredients like honey, yogurt, and avocado. Be sure to apply the mask evenly and leave it on for fifteen minutes before rinsing it off completely.

Finally, consider giving yourself a massage. Use your favourite lotion or oil and give yourself a gentle massage all over your body. Not only will this help you relax, but it will also improve circulation and reduce stress levels.

Can Relaxation Exercises Be Included in a Spa Day at Home?

For a spa day at home, incorporating relaxation exercises can enhance the experience. A relaxation exercises overview can include deep breathing, meditation, and gentle stretching to promote relaxation and reduce stress. Adding these exercises to your home spa day can help you unwind and feel rejuvenated.

How do I have a spa day at home with a friend?

The best things in life are often shared experiences, you don’t need to go it alone when it comes to home spa days, but planning is the key.

Decide a date and location for the spa day, your place or theirs?  Pick and plan the activities, just as you would if visiting a real spa, for example in the manicures, pedicures and facials in the morning, some dinner, then an afternoon of massages.

Make sure you’ve stocked up on all the supplies needed, if you do this regularly you might find you keep a selection of products such as bath salts on hand, so it might just be perishable items such as food and drink, who doesn’t love a glass of wine during a spa exerpence?

Keep in mind your friend may need different products, we all have different skin types, if you have dry facial skin and they have oily skin you’ll need different types of facial treatments.

Once you’ve got everything planned out, all that’s left is to relax and enjoy!
